Newry City 2-1 Glentoran
CIS Insurance Cup - Tuesday, 29th August, 2006
NEWRY City turned Group A on its head with this defeat of Glentoran at The Showgrounds and boosted their own hopes of reaching the last eight.

And they were forced to do it with ten men following Paddy Quinn's 40th minute dismissal for foul play.

Newry opened the scoring after 11 minutes through James Willis who pounced a Quinn ball pushed out by Elliott Morris to slot home unchallenged from 10 yards.

Glentoran levelled on 27 minutes. An initial Gary Hamilton effort was pushed out for a corner by keeper Robert Robinson but from the resultant set piece the former Northern Ireland frontman floated the ball over for Colin Nixon to nod home from point-blank range.

The pendulum swung back in Newry's favour ten minutes from the break, however, after Quinn unleashed a strong left-foot drive into the bottom corner from around 12 yards out.

Then came Quinn's red card and from that point one might have expected the thus far undefeated visitors to seal the game in the second half.

Not so. Some resolute defending from Newry kept the Glentoran frontline at bay although they did need the woodwork to save them on 80 minutes when Hamilton smashed a curling effort from the right off an upright.
