Glenavon 1-2 Ballymena United
Carnegie Premier League - Saturday, 22nd September, 2007
BALLYMENA United got their Carnegie Premier League challenge off to a winning start with this defeat of Glenavon at Mourneview Park in what was the third meeting between the sides already this season.

Kevin Kelbie knocked home the first Carnegie Premier League goal of the season with a strong finish from 12 yards after Garth Scates flicked a Mark Picking left wing cross into his path.

The Lurgan Blues levelled on 30 minutes thanks to a superb solo effort from Richard Gibson. He collected the ball on the left edge of the area, took it past a number of defenders before dispatching a left-foot shot past Paul Murphy low into the bottom right corner.

The visitors regained the advantage, however, on 54 minutes when Davitt Walsh converted a spot-kick in the bottom left corner awarded after Johnny Cowan had upended Scates.

Glenavon almost equalised for a second time five minutes later when Lewis Hamlin broke down the left but could only direct his subsequent shot onto the outside of an upright.

And on 77 minutes they did have the ball in the net again when Cowan nodded in a Mickey Keogh cross only for referee Michael McLaughlin to spot an infringement and disallow the effort.
