Glenavon 2-1 Linfield
CIS Insurance Cup - Saturday, 16th September, 2006
TWO goals in the final eight minutes sensationally handed previously pointless Glenavon victory over undefeated Linfield in this closing Group C encounter at Mourneview Park.

With the result not going to effect the outcome of the group there might have appeared - on the surface - to be nothing at stake but for Glenavon this was a last chance to break their losing streak before the Carnegie Premier League kicks off next weekend.

As might have been expected Linfield started the game the brighter with Glenn Ferguson heading wide early on from a Jim Ervin flick while, a little later, a cross from Ervin was captured by Paul Rice just as Ferguson and Tim Mouncey lay in wait to convert.

It was Glenavon, though, who came closest to breaking the first half deadlock when, moments from the break, Ciaran Quinn finished weakly with just Alan Mannus to beat.

In a repeat of the first half Linfield looked the more dangerous after the restart and, indeed, it was no surprise when they eventually went ahead three minutes short of the hour when the Glenavon defence failed to clear allowing Ferguson to knock the ball into the path of Tim Mouncey who forced it home from close range.

One might have expected Glenavon to crumble after this but, to their credit, they fought back to equalise with eight minutes remaining when Paul McKnight crossed for Trinidadian international Attiba Charles to nod home at the back post.

Then, four minutes later, the Lurgan Blues amazingly grabbed the points thanks to a superbly struck Paul Walsh 20-yard free-kick to leave Linfield somewhat shellshocked ....... and defeated.
