Linfield 2-0 Dungannon Swifts
CIS Insurance Cup - Wednesday, 4th October, 2006
HOLDERS Linfield continued their CIS Insurance Cup defence with this quarter-final defeat of Dungannon Swifts at Windsor Park.

The first 45 minutes were a fairly sluggish affair with neither side looking dangerous in front of goal although of the chances that were created Peter Thompson perhaps came closest in the opening quarter with a header which Swifts keeper Dwayne Nelson safely gathered.

Indeed the only real moment of note after an hours play was Johnny Montgomery's 57th minute dismissal following a tussle with Michael Gault.

Despite the extra man it still took the Blues until the 71st minute to finally break the deadlock when Thompson got on the end of a Gault pass to drill the ball home from 18 yards.

And the issue was put beyond doubt just a couple of minutes after that as Thomas Stewart knocked home his second goal in as many games after he met a Tim Mouncey ball from the left.

But perhaps the game will be remembered most for the floodlight moments from the end. The lights stayed out for a full ten minutes before play was able to resume for the final few exchanges.
